A Poem by Michael

Rescue me from the firey depths

Where is my hero

Rescue me from the furnace of death

Where is my victor

Rescue me from this house of pain

As the men draw nearer to me

From out of the shadows

A parting of the smoke came

As the volunteer firefighters

Called out my name

Fighting back the beast

That has come to claim my soul

If it wasn't for their bravery

If not for their swords

I would have been dead

So have respect for those that wear the crown

Cause the next time it could be you

In your house buring to the ground.

It is estimated that there are over 30,000 fire departments in the United States.  22,000 fire departments are staffed with volunteers.  5000 fire departments are staffed with a combination of career and volunteers.  3000 are staffed only with career personnel.

850,000 firefighters throughout the United States.  600,000 are volunteers.  It takes brave men and women to fight that firey beast, but to think that 600,000 firefighters are volunteers they lay their life on the line just because they care, because they want to make a difference in their community, and they don't ask for compensation, they do it out of love.  So the next time you see a volunteer with their lights on please pull over as if you would a police car or a fire truck or perhaps an ambulance.

This is beautiful.
One of my best childhood friends, her brother was a volunteer firefighter and he passed.
It was heartbreaking. But it was all he ever wanted to do, all he ever talked about. It was his dream.
It was his way of helping others.
As heart-wrenching as the funeral was, it was beautiful.
So many people came and we talked and we remembered and we loved.
This is a beautiful tribute to those who risk their lives to keep us safe.
My hats off to them. My prayers with their families.

Beautiful write. Brava!
