Essential Unity

Essential Unity

A Poem by Mike Defreitas

Life. I'm born. I grow and emerge with each day.
The days pass and the body grows. It reaches a final height; a final mark. And then?
The self grows too; with it, and in it. It never realizes just how defined it is
By the marks and conditions of its body
The height. The way you rise and compare to other bodies
Which means other selves

And the comparisons begin and the people compare because this is what we do
The self, contained in a body; determined by the impulses
And motivations which help us survive.
Between each other and with each other
A bigger and stronger body demands respect
It seems, almost, that a bigger body
Deserves a bigger self
Heads up above; below, the little pip squeak
Yearns for your attention
While communication occurs up above
Between the soldiering selves

Life attacks all; oh yes' dont you ever forget it
A self in a body; a SELF IN A BODY!
The existential facticity is easily overlooked
By the place and positioning within the body
An error; a foible; a weakness
The temptation is great but it leads to
A major folly; a body, ephemeral; illusory
While the observing consciousness
The mind beyond the self
Can dissociate from it
Analyze it
See it
Control it

The lies that the self in the body tells to itself!
Implicit memory networks, subterfuging attention
Guiding thoughts in ridiculous ways;
A self defined by its body
Is a self ignorant of
Science, reason and truth

Relationships; non-linear dynamics
A self in the body can only see the immediacy
And it ignores the relationships;
The context in which life unfolds
And existence interacts

Fealty to the truth
The body, source of life
Source of energy and emotion
Yet paradoxically, we need to quiet
Its perspective; the part which
Is defined by size, looks, and strength
Strengths or weaknesses; egomaniac delusion
And the second arrows of criticism
Leading to Self annihilation

Grandiose and Diminutive
Can the self stay present?
To honor the uniqueness of all?
To honor those things
Which make the other vulnerable?
To stand by,
And mutually acknowledge
The state we find ourselves in?
Individually, and collectively?
Can we rise above our individuality
And recognize our essential unity?
