The Sword in the Society

The Sword in the Society

A Poem by Althea

The last sword I plunged into society
broke.
Like the Sword in the Stone"
like the cartoon recruiting videos for America’s
largest corporations.
Even I cannot abide by my beliefs for
I desire to eat TV Dinners while
muttering to my newspaper.

I feel utterly too much like Solomon.
And I shudder when I realize he’s more likely to be remembered
as an amendment
than a king.
And so it was self-fulfilling prophecy.
Or perhaps just plain old regular
prophecy"

Either way the prophecy was fulfilled

And ain’t no Flobots or Bono or Maya Angelou are going to stop it.
We’ll all get PhDs, go swimming in the summer

And die quietly.
