Chalkboard Chess Game

Chalkboard Chess Game

A Poem by Michelle Anselm
"

This was written four days before my Senior year of highschool began, in a haze of agonizing and restless lack of sleep, unable to sleep that night, for some reason... My anticipation for entering my last year (Class of '08!).

"

School is calling.

We'll all be hauling

a*s on that first day.

Bent up books

and empty staplers;

secret nooks

and public secrets...

Never had it any different;

never wanted any different.

Quadruple years have come

and gone.

Soon I'll be Queen

and not the pawn.

Check, Mate.

Here's looking at you, kids...

An interesting look on your upcoming senior year feelings. A nice twist to those feelings.

Never had it any different don't wanted any different...like a pawn locked into the board game of life...

Along with the other imagery these lines make this a really good poem.

i love the metaphor of chess with highschool. slowly moving across the board... the pawn becoming the queen.

also really liked how you broke up "check, mate." which gave it a clever new meaning. :)

nice little poem.
