The Battle

The Battle

A Poem by MJ Rothlain

Boom.

Boom.

The drum beats on

Dew fresh on the grass

Sun creeping over the horizon

The day is young

Yet already trouble marches

People sleep calmly in homes nearby

Unaware of the impending battle

The soldiers march on

The clash may soon erupt

A bird sings from its tree

Animals scurry around

It is near dawn

A shot rings out

Shattering something

A small piece of the army dies

Gunfire erupts

Opposing sides rage at each other

Clawing, scratching

There are no rules here

The sun has beaten down

All day, mercilessly

Finally, after forever

Night’s cool hand comes

Troubles are swept away for now

That first shot shattered

Not just that one man

Rather the whole world

Conflict erupts all over

A virus to the Earth

Changing it forever

For good?
