Two Wrongs

Two Wrongs

A Story by Jacqueline

Two Wrongs

she couldn't take the pain anymore
so she left the front door
unlocked that night
a white knight was supposed to put
an end to all of her troubles
so that she could live again

the first smack made them both cry;
she believed her husband's lies
after that it was black eyes,
many broken bones and busted lips
to the doctors she always said
that she slipped

but she did fall far down into a well-
a split ranch, 1 acre, 4 bedroom hell
burning with her were their two kids
who saw everything that their father did
at night under the beds they hid

but this night a change was to come
no more running from fists and flying
plates
a week ago she set up a date
with a man who was a professional
who took her cash from a brown paper bag
after listening to her confession

it was going to look like a robbery gone wrong
she took the kids along to a movie while
hubby slept at home
30 minutes later he would meet his death
the house, insurance money and the kids would
be all she'd have left

when she returned the horror in her eyes was sincere
but it was clear that things didn't go according
to plan
a kindly policeman took the kids while she was being
handcuffed-the hitman was an undercover cop
after the shock wore off the husband wanted the charges
dropped, but the wheels of justice can't be stopped
they roll over many lives
after seeing the tears in his kid's eyes
the husband reached out to his wife's hand
then glanced at an old scar and whispered in her ear
"I understand."
