Opening the Cage: My Gift to You

Opening the Cage: My Gift to You

A Poem by Jacqueline

Not just unconditional love, but selfless as well

Opening the Cage: My Gift to You

you wait on me hand and foot

my illness causing you to neglect

a life you deserve to live

as you bath me

change my soiled bed linens

i can only think of the ultimate present

to you I need to give

when we used to dance many years ago

the twinkle in your eyes always

glowed

now, all I see is hopelessness-

emptiness; a void

i try to keep from crying

as your whole life is slowly

being destroyed

when the doorbell rang yesterday

i noticed a tiny bit of glee

i know all about your secret tryst-

there will be no judgment from me

you deserve all the happiness you need

i think i’ll retire now

allow you to be; no more sneaking around

i’ve made peace and have begged God

to forgive

a transgression i’m about to commit

i’ve lied in pain for many days

storing pills to keep me from suffering

when you return to see my lifeless

form

please don’t mourn-

this is my final gift of love for you

my weakened body could manage to

bring

:( I live in a similiar situation with my wife. I have taken care of her for the last 13 years of our 16 year marriage. And although she isn't as in bad shape as the person in your poem seems to be, it still hasn't been easy. This is a saddened, but great write. Good job.
