gold

gold

A Poem by Molly Garnet

it’s not fair, he said
and god said, you’re right
it hurts, he said
and god said, I know
god didn’t remind him of the cross
he didn’t gloat about scripture
because at that moment,
god was not the all knowing
he was a friend
and they sat together
and they cried together
then the boy said, please just let me have my heart back
and god said, I’m sorry
but it was never yours to keep
but it was never hers either
it’s always been mine
and it’s not fair
and it hurts like hell
but I love you
and your heart is gold to me
and I’ll carry you through it all
