A Poem by Molly Garnet

Some washed out bar band played a Rolling Stone cover the other night

And I could have sworn I heard your voice

A little too loud and way off pitch

I froze and went deaf for a moment

And your voice was gone

It must have been that fourth whiskey sour

Soaking my judgment

And I would have let it go

Except the next day on the subway

I could have sworn I saw your eyes

Laughing like hammocks on a young boy’s face

But I blinked and you were gone

I never saw that boy again

But then again,

Brown eyes are the most common

The next morning

I went to the deli where we met

To get a simple coffee

And I must have just missed you

Because your scent lingered at the doorway

Cologne, mint gum, and a trace of tobacco

Though you swore you hadnt smoked in months

But the wind blew the door closed

And you left as well

I couldnt bring myself to order anything

Even now

I feel your breath on my neck

And my goosebumps are worse than ever

Because I know that when I turn around

You’ll be there

Pathetically trying to surprise me

So I turn around

And once again, youre gone
