Scattered Leaves

Scattered Leaves

A Poem by Mary May

I sit up high among the boughs
My song already sung
And watch the giants pass me
All immortals fallen dumb
Alone they stand as mountains
Fading high into the west
The rustlings of their mighty deeds
Passed on among the rest
And they tremendous deities
Who'd taken over Thebes
Or in the dust found Mercury
Or tamed the savage seas
Whose eyes had seen to other worlds
More vivid than our own
Continued on in silence
All perceiving all alone

While yet upon a nearby branch
A mother softly sighed
And solitary further down
A child, unhappy, cried
And from the darkness in the shade
A host wailed loud and long
"Please save me from this emptiness"
A thousand voices strong
There spattered in the dappled shade
Apart but everywhere
A million voices wept and prayed
Their solitary prayer

And yet still others blind to them
Were scrambling for the top
To taste the fruit of destiny
To hope that when they drop
There from the spot where they had fell
A golem pure and strong
And bearing all their glorious works
Would spring to carry on

Still watching all this potent host
Those low, those high above
I drew in breath and once again
I sang my song of love
And here and there among the boughs
A tiny flash of stars
And voices echoed back to me
"We’re yours if you are ours"
And given wings by each small voice
And likewise them from mine
We flew up to the highest bough
To watch the sun recline

And I and they sit there as one
While onwards all alone
Another of the titans
Rustles past as silent stone

"How strange it is"
I thought and stared
As yet another passed
"To wish to be a mountain
While your loved ones cannot last"
Great Caesar all victorious
Oh beauteous Pharaoh Queen
Forever standing glorious
No other remnant seen
All solitary, all alone
How many mighty deeds
To claim this place above us all
Immortals no one needs
