Broken Narratives: Monsters.

Broken Narratives: Monsters.

A Story by Inrid Wolgoaft
"

“Do not cry. Do not be sad. There are only two things that would attract a Gorgon: tears and sadness.

"

A door slams shut loudly "

She covered her sister’s ears and held her close as the violent sounds continued to erupt outside.

The little one took off her older sister’s hands and replaced them with her own chubby ones. She’s also a big girl now; she can take care of herself.

A glass breaks to the floor "

“It’s okay. So long as we don’t cry and make any noise, he won’t know that were here.” Her older sister whispered.

Angry screams "

It was the third day after her 4th birthday that her sister had deemed it okay to tell her about the Gorgon. Her sister said that the monster would hop from one home to another and feast in the flesh of people. Her sister said that the Gorgon likes plump children like her the most. However, the Gorgon would not just attack people randomly. There were only two things that would make a person appetizing to the Gorgon: sadness and tears.

“So if you happen to hear loud crashes and banging outside our bedroom door. Never ever cry and stay silent.” Her sister warned her repeatedly.

“THIS IS THE THIRD TIME!!!” "

Angry and choking voices "

Another door slams shut; the hinges almost falling off the wall.

Then silence.

“There. See. He’s gone now.” Her sister said as they settled under the covers; letting the peace of slumber take over.

But she’s a big girl now. For she knows one thing:

“Soon. He’ll have a fest soon.”“Do not cry. Do not be sad. There are only two things that would attract a Gorgon: tears and sadness.”
