Pretending

Pretending

A Poem by Ashley N.G.
"

It seems to hurt worse when you find yourself alone with you own thoughts...

"

Sometimes I pretend

that vacations are supposed to last this long,

but when I’m done pretending

I realize I feel even more alone.

It doesn’t help

that everyone around me can’t bear to speak a word.

Afraid of hurting someone deeper,

no, afraid themselves that they will hurt.

That familiar air surrounds me,

I’m sitting alone on the floor.

Holding close the gentle reminders

of the way it was before.

You scent upon them lingers,

I close my eyes and hold you tight.

I hate pretending all the time,

but usually that’s what gets me through the night.

I absolutely love the beginning. A great way to start the poem. And it ended very well too. I can't help but point out that in the last line you accidentally wrote "though" instead of "through".
A good way of expressing yourself.

interesting. could be interpreted a few ways. the imagery is light, not very substantial--more like a simple song of longing than anything.

This is fabulous. You touched on the emotions people feel when they don't want to say something. as you said 'afraid themselves that they will hurt', a lot of the times this is how we feel. I like this a lot.
