"Venting"

"Venting"

A Poem by Maureen

So long ago I used to teach

Each child I would hope to reach

With novels, poetry and more

Each daily lesson I’d adore

But changes came as time passed by

My list of duties piled high

I had to deal with arrogations

From parents with their declarations

Demanding what I had to do

To ensure their children made it through

Hard work and ethics lost their role

The parents now had full control

They couldn’t blame their little dear

For fighting with another peer

And a failing test could never be

Their child’s responsibility

But, someone’s head would have to roll

So denouncing teachers became the goal

If a student’s late, we’ll  get the blame

A missing homework, again the same

Accountability was no more

Things no longer as they were before

The parents loved to castigate

The teachers whom they’d oft berate

I hope one day that they’ll perceive

The hearts of teachers they’ve aggrieved

As we try to explain the consequences

Of raising children with false pretenses
