Breaking Through the Darkness

Breaking Through the Darkness

A Poem by Derek Cummings
"

I wrote this poem after becoming lost hiking in the mountains. It's more of an analogy of how life can be a struggle in various ways, emotionally and mentally, but there is always a light to be found.

"

Lost on a path that goes and goes,

feeling less highs than lows

with the body becoming drained

of the confidence it once sustained

Darkness began to grow closer with it,

days and nights became stranger

to this one now starts to fear

her or his own hidden danger

Because of this unwelcomed intrusion

that has driven one’s mind to delusion

confidence has become lost in the hesitation

to withdraw from such miserable desolation.

In a pressing need to find his way

and as a result of this growing irritation,

desperate actions to escape this dismay

grew of a much higher temptation

To prevent from submitting to such impulsiveness

that would prolong this annoying wretchedness

one calmly pondered his life that is yet complete

in hopes all this anguish would soon become obsolete

Then memories and mysteries unraveled

through this darkness so thick

And that most dear

Became ever more clear

A hint of optimism flooded within

revealing the resolve to find another way

 redeeming confidence for another day.

This really hit home for me. I deal with PTSD, and this felt like my everyday life two years ago, when I was in the thick of my disorder. It was a truly rough time, but that little "hint of optimism" is what kept me pushing forward when I wanted to give up.

Thanks for sharing.

Best thing about poetry is individuality identified by the poet and given to the reader. Nailed it with this.

It's one of the reasons I'm enticed to write poetry. Thanks
