Pretenders Pulse

Pretenders Pulse

A Poem by L.D.
"

someone I knew

"
underneath your chilly exterior there is a longing for your heart to breathe freely
to breathe openly
your pulse pushes through your chest like a tsunami through opposing waves
you breathe words through your mouth and out of your chest
like a lifeless willow layered slightly deeper than the rest
you’re hard to comprehend
a kaleidoscope posing to be a woman
I try to pretend that I wanted that winter to come to an end
hand in hand
our last push was a passionate one
your compassion was comparable to the beauty of a staggerbush in the breeze,
but you knew that already
we are approaching our end
I guess its time one of us pay the fare
before we decide who the debt falls on
you're already gone
I have no quarrel with paying again
it certainly won't be my last
farewell again
my closest friend

I REALLY liked this. It left me feeling a little melancholy, but not in a bad way. I thoroughly enjoy when a poem can give me a feeling, even if I can't truly see a direct message. This poem let my mind float from image to image very nicely because of that. I picture these words being said in the fog - the first line obviously nudges me in that direction, but so does the subtle love and sadness and closure that I sense in here. I might be way off, but that's what I got from this. The image is a nice one.

Your clever use of language and metaphors are really fun to read. All of the images add up to the feeling of melancholy that I have now. My favorites lines: "a kaleidoscope posing to be a woman" and "but you knew that already". Definitely want to read more from you. I like your style and voice. Just, nice.
