![]() In Silence We PrayA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
In Silence We Pray Pitch of the ditch deep and wide My buddies and I in silent prayer Hearing the planes way up there Engulfed in silence we pray Throat tightens as a bomb explodes Bombardment has begun Who will be the next one? Will I be the next one to die? Blood all around me Sickening stench Limbs torn away and nerves pinch Must remain silent if I want to live Fear fills my desperate mind Screaming inside, eyes in blank stare I can still hear the planes up there Silence within the scarped hole A shaking hand makes the strike Match flickering lights of the night Bomb landed to my right Blood covers my hands Lamentations and weeping sounds Break the silence after bombs explode Whispers of dread implode As lungs stills my breath Fat tanks arrive with guns pointing upward God heard my silent prayer Planes scattering way up there In this foxhole, I can now breathe My family won’t feel the sorrow of this war My life was spared by a heartfelt prayer I no longer hear the planes up there I’ll live and fight another day I’m unpolished only a teen While seasoned soldiers lay here dead Now I make a list in my head An alphabet of things left undone I carry three letters of final goodbyes One soaked in its author’s blood The other two are covered in mud To their wives moms and dads © 2008 Nancy Lee Shrader |
