Haiku Cataract Blindness

Haiku Cataract Blindness

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Haiku Cataract Blindness

Author can’t write when

Cataracts cover both eyes

It’s like being blind

There’s no darkness here

Looking through a waterfall

All things hazy white

Blindness in daylight

Can see better in the dark

Sunglasses to write

Cannot see to drive

Must be chauffeured everywhere

In daylight and dark

Day of surgery comes

It’s amazing, I can see

If I close one eye

I can see them now

A grandmother’s dream

Grandchildren’s faces

Another three months

Cataract is finally ripe

Back to surgery

Colors are vivid

Grass is green instead of gray

Flowers are amazing

Can see with both eyes

In sunshine and in the rain

Moon and stars, I see

Grandson’s baseball game

I can see his gleeful face

When he hits homeruns

Granddaughter’s blue eyes

Sparkling as she cheerleads

I can hear and see

Oldest grandson too

Keep tabs when he’s a courting

His grandma see’s all

This author can write

Many books I have inside

Will now be published

hmm, very well done. I didn't know what cataracts was until I looked it up after reading your piece. I like the imagery coupled with the colors and the story attached to each haiku. Well thought out, though in some places it seems like you kinda didn't know what to say. Either way Its very enjoyable! Great job!

At this point I haven't developed cataracts, but I've heard from many others that surgery has made an amazing difference. You've penned this one for the thousands who are seeing better and appreciating all the wonders of life. Nice job, Nancy. Sharon
