Demons

A classmate told me about a funeral that he had attended.

He told me about how it was for a friend,

And how he was only 16 when he met his end.

His death had come about through gang violence.

It was a Friday night when gunshots had broken the silence.

But he told me how it wasn’t those bullets that had ended his life,

That he had met his demise years ago.

He was eleven years old and full of life.

He had a brother, older than him by about 8 years or so.

The two were close, and the younger looked up to the eldest with admiration.

One night a car drove by and lit up the street with gunfire and thunderclaps,

And big brother lay dead due to gang affiliation.

The little boy was crushed, and the young are easily swayed.

His mind became clouded and his heart filled with hate.

He discovered who the car belonged to and decided there was a debt to be paid.

A group of boys who called themselves his “new brothers” offered him a place amongst them.

All he had to do was avenge his true brother, find the man that did the deed and end him.

And so it began.

A tormented boy of 11 years old, made a plan to kill.

He would be man is what they told,

A void was left in his soul that he was going to fill.

It was late when he walked up to the man’s front gate.

It was a dark night when he would seal his fate.

He approached the door, gun held behind his back.

Death would stain the floor and never go back.

He knocked on the door some, and the lights turned on with a flick.

When the door opened, he used his thumb to pull back the hammer until he heard a soft “click”.

I was horrified that I could be so removed from the dark side of humanity.

That little children had seen more than I ever would and they had paid for it with their sanity.

I looked into my friend’s eyes and knew that they had seen Evil, and it lurked behind them.

My friend looked at me with a soul full of pain.

He said,

“When darkness comes and knocks on your door, you better say never,

Because a dance with your demons could last you forever”.
