1914 war poem

"

In 1914 we took a little trip

We crossed the land by rail, and the pond by ship

We took along some Newfies dressed in Blue Putees

And we caught the bloody Germans at the town of Ypres [CHORUS]

We fired our guns and the Germans kept on comin'

There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago

We fired once more and the Huns began a runnin'

Down the line of trenches from the Swiss frontier to St. Malo

Sir Arthur Currie said: 'We take 'em by surprise!'

It was on the ridge at Vimy we damned their bloody eyes

We held our fire until the barrage was through

And over-the-top we clambered machine guns belching, too!

                         [Chorus]

They ran through barbed wire, and they ran through Hellfire

They Ran through a mine-field where a trench rat couldn't go

They ran so fast a Sopwith couldn't catch 'em.

Down the line of trenches from the Swiss frontier to San M'lo (St. Malo)

We fired our cannons 'til the barrels melted down

So we limbered up our big guns to fight another round

At Amiens we trounced them and the Kaiser lost his mind

It wasn't long thereafter that The Armistice was signed

                  [Chorus & repeat verse 4]
