A Chapter by Nichole White

Angelica was an Italian goddess. Her dark eyes bore into mine and I could feel a twinge slide down my back. Her black ringlets lay gently on her shoulders and back moving ever so slightly in the wind. She was small in stature but possessed strength in her stance. The corners of her ruby mouth tuned up and she shot me an evil smirk. She was dangerous. I felt her stare pulse through my veins.
I was caught off guard and she was already rummaging  thru my head. Tossing around memories like rag dolls to find a weakness. Her smile became thinner and wider barely showing her glossy white teeth. I froze. Had she found Em?
Angelica’s eyes became fierce and I knew that she had. I panicked and thought of an unsuspecting Em, lying in her hospital room sleeping while Angelica crept up to her. I had given her up to the most vile creature imaginable. I needed to get to Em before she could. I had to figure out a way to get out alive.
I heard a shuffle about ten yards behind me and I knew that someone – or something – wasn’t far. I had about thirty seconds until they would be on my back. Angelica knew this as well. My forever beating heart fluttered slightly and I took a step forward. She mimicked my move and we were now just a couple feet away from each other. She cocked her head to the side and her smile was gone.
“Why do you love her? She is of mortal blood and death has almost consumed her entirely. She will be no companion to you when she is gone. The thought of her death makes you cringe and yet you stay around to watch.” Angelica flickered as Ani crept up behind me.
I could feel Ani’s heat on my back.
“She is of no concern to you.” My voice was cold.
“Oh, but she is.” Angelica straightened her posture.
Ani crept to my side and slid her soft hand into mine. For all reasons that I couldn’t explain I could not resist her touch. The sensation that ran through my body was overwhelming and I brought the back of her hand up to my cheek. Her skin was delicate and I kissed her finger tips. I was consumed by her. I felt week against her hold. She drew a deep breath thru her nose and exhaled through her perfectly shaped mouth. I could feel her breath upon my neck and she already had a tight grip upon my body. My arms went limp and I succumbed to her hold.
Angelica was deemed an ugly imp compared to Ani and she felt the thought in my head. She winced and glared devishly at Ani.
“Ani… has a talent that I can’t stand compared to. She has already spun you in her web, but, I wonder what your Emilia would think? “ Competative by nature. “She is very important to us because she is important to you. You are smart, I can only assume that you know exactly what I mean. Ken’ichi you have only one choice to save her from dying sooner than expected. Harnku will bear no grief for what he will do… and no hesitation. He takes great pride in his efforts.   Could you live thru the guilt of knowing you killed your loved one before it was her time? “
My thoughts cleared and I stiffened. Ani broke her hold and stared at Angelica as if to kill her.
Em… dying in a hospital and she loved me. Guilt rose to the back of my throat and I swallowed hard. I had to get to her.
My eyes darted across the plains trying to find an escape. I knew that at this moment Angelica was listening and I had to make my move as random as possible.
“You will not succeed Ken’ichi.” Ani was not at her side with haste. She lowered herself with a slight smile taunting me to run. A chase she would enjoy. Immortals were bored with everyday commonalities and this was just a fun time to her. I could tell by the color change of her eyes, from blue green to a magnetic deep blue, that she was ready to capture and destroy if she had to.
“May I have the chance to say goodbye to her?” My voice was warm and I kept my thoughts only on Em’s sickly face. I cringed at the image. Angelica smiled with the smell of conquest in the air. Ani looked disappointed but her body never changed.
“Goodbye? “ Her smile widened. She was smug and placed her weight on her left side. She left me a moment to wait, searching through my head to see my bluff. Of course she found none. If leaving Em to lengthen her time here on this blasted planet, to give her time to spend with Allegra, for Allegra to come to some sort of peace with the fact that her daughter was going to die, I would do anything I could. Even if I knew my own pain would be absolutely unbearable.
“Yes, goodbye.”
“You are agreeing then…” Ani’s body stood straight and her voice sang. It would be a hard task for anyone to not agree with her, although, I’ve had much practice in toning her alluring voice out of my head.
