My Religion

My Religion

A Poem by nickdaman6
"

One of my better poems, I believe. Music is my religion, so I expressed it in poetry. It is part of my poetry and song book, Of Sadness, Of Gladness, Of Little Things: A Book of Poetry and Songs.

"

Music is my religion.

Listening to the melodious riffs

of Kurt Cobain and Hendrix

is my psalm reading

on Sundays.

The crunchy and raw solos

and improve of John Frusciante

are my moments of prayer, of peace.

Listening to each note,

that’s each prayerful bead and word

to me.

Those sweet, smooth blues jam sessions

of B.B. King and Eric Clapton,

those are my masses,

my sessions of religion.

The intense bass lines of Giddy Lee,

and the powerful, pounding drums

of Neil Peart are my moments

of communion. When the music

is at its climax, when it moves

through you the most.

The emotional and ever-lasting songs

of John Lennon and George Harrison.

They are my preachers,

they are my priests,

they are the ones who convey

meaningful things into

words.

If everyone accepted

music as their religion,

how do you think the world

would be?

I think it would be a harmonious world,

one of peace, of love, of melody.

Magnifico Maestro! I especially enjoy the way you have mentioned those who have and continue to inspire you, and the passion you have for something that is the focal point of your life!!
I would have added, Ziggy Marley as I love his song, "Love is my religion".

Nick, I remember feeling this same way when I was in college. I'm a musician too, and back then I was grappling with organized religion and all that sort of stuff and really felt that music is perhaps the purest form of expression available. It relies not on words, only sounds, for expression so it's easier for people to be honest. Very good subject you've chosen here. Nice poem.
