![]() Can I Trust You?A Story by tammyhuynh![]() Tatsuo is a Soul Tamer, a spirit who helps guide souls. He must keep his true identity a secret. Until he met Kim Hughes, a beautiful junior girl that he fell for immediately and his secret came out.![]() Never trust anyone, never trust anyone but you, my father’s departing words.
His picture sits on the wall and
glares at me with no smile; no emotion. No nothing. I look at myself in the mirror, I’m
an exact replica of him but I myself have not followed his words, his dying
wish. I trusted a girl. I trusted her with my life and now, I’m through. I told
her my true identity and it broke out. I never knew… the consequences of my
action. That’s one part my father had forgotten to teach me before he left. He
just kept telling me to never trust anybody because of who I am. I will never be one of them. Never
be a human like the rest of the world. I sighed and grabbed my bag, Sulking around is only gonna get me in
trouble with the Grandmaster. I just need to hurry. I can never come back here,
never. I grab my dad’s photo and
stuffed it in my big bag full of random clothes and my katana sword. The blood red handle always reminds
me of who I really am. A soul tamer; a demon, never human. But that girl, she managed to get
the truth out of me. She got the better of me. There was so many things that I
could’ve done. Leave her there, just standing there; confused and questioning
but instead her dark cute brown eyes got the better of me. My mouth moved and
the words spilled out. She listened than ran away like a lion after prey. She looked at me like I was a
monster. I am a monster. Being a soul tamer didn’t seem to be enough for the
Grandmaster, I had to go ahead and have a demon mother. My father, had to go
and marry a demon, not a human. I looked around my little apartment
one last time before throwing on a Manchester United cap to cover my face and
locking the doors, forever. Chapter 1 Tatsuo “Chickening out, eh Tatsuo?” Howard,
a blond seventeen year old with blue eyes and freckles. He was the school’s
quarterback since sophomore year and one of the biggest bullies of all times.
He lives right under my apartment and we tend to get into a lot of fights,
(most of which I win), and in trouble with the cops and neighbors. “Says who?” I asked as I came down
the metal stairs that led to his apartment. “Well, you have a big bag with you,
if you’re not leaving, then I don’t know who is,” the quarterback gave me a
smirk. “Afraid I could beat ya so you just leaving now, huh?” I chuckled as I pulled the other
strap over my shoulder, “You know full well that I could you beat you any old
day.” “Oh I know, Tatsuo, it’s just that,
this time when I win, Kimmy’s mines,”
finished Howard. At the mention of Kim’s name, I
wanted to end his life, take his soul from his body with my blood red katana.
Kim, the girl I told everything to. The one that had betrayed me. “Whatever,” I turned my back to him,
“Have Kim.” I started walking away, leaving
Howard to just stand there in shock before I gave him my last words, “But I
will kill you if you do anything to hurt her.” I continued walking, down the street
with my face covered and my hands in my pocket. “Yo, Tatsuo!” Carson, a brunette
seventeen year old with silver eyes. He’s a good head shorter than me but had
always had my good side. I guess, he was really my best friend. The one that's always been there beside me; there to stand up to me. There is no turning back now; no matter how much I want to. I didn’t stop. I kept walking,
slowly increasing my pace until I rounded the corner of our neighborhood’s
power plant. “Night of day,” I lifted two fingers
and started chanting, “Light of night. Make me tight.” I then turned and ran through the
fence and inside. “Tatsuo!” Carson came by and stopped
before he resumed his running, “Tatsuo!” I easily leapt over the fence and
watched my friend disappear down the street. Never
trust anybody but yourself. After adjusting the strap on my
shoulder, I turned and started walking in the opposite direction. “Tatsuo,” a beautiful voice. The one
voice that I love to hear but had cause me too much harm. “Kim,” I knew it was a mistake. A
mistake to look into her beautiful hazel eyes. “I’m sorry!” she blurted out. “I’m
sorry I got the truth out of you! I never knew the consequences!” “It doesn’t matter,” I sighed, hurt
flushing through my body. “Nothing matters now.” “Tatsuo, don’t leave, please,” I
hate seeing her cry, the worst sight ever. “Don’t leave me!” “I’m sorry there is no way out of
this,” it took all my strength, all my power, to turn my back to Kim. Something bright and a strong wind blew
my hat away. I look up only to be greeted by a shoji door. “Tatsuo,” a husky voice called my
name. “Grandmaster Shinji,” I say. “Your time in this city is over,” I
could only see his face slowly making an appearance through the bright light, “However,
you had told a human of what you really are. It is going to be another couple
years before you will be able to get back out in field.” “Grand-,” I started. “Tatsuo! What’s going on?” Kim ran
up to me. “Where did the doors come from?” No, she can’t come to close to the
gate otherwise it would zap her of all her energy. Wait, hold on. No human has
ever been able to see these doors. Is Kim, a soul tamer? It can’t be, whatever
she is, she needs to stay way! “Kim, don’t get any closer!” I
ordered, but knowing Kim she kept coming closer. “You are coming home now!” I could
tell that the grandmaster will not be so happy with me if I kept him waiting. “He’s not going anywhere!” Kim
grabbed my shoulders. “Kim, get out of here!” I yelled,
trying to shrug her off. “Now, Tatsuo!” something grabbed my
waist, including Kim’s, and pulled us in. The last thing I heard was Kim’s
scream before total darkness took over my vision. Chapter 2 Tatsuo My first day of school was not so
memorable. It was just a normal Wednesday, for a normal sixteen year old to be
enjoying the day. First period has just ended and I’m really relieved. All I
got that morning were glares from the boys and girls giggling. I could only sit
and wait for my Soul Teller to ring up; saying there is a soul nearby needing
help crossing over. “Hey new kid!” a voice made me turn
around from my way to my second class, biology. “I have a name, you know,” I rolled
my eyes as I stopped to let the brunette catch up. “Sorry, just don’t know it,” he
smirked as he tried to catch his breath. These humans are way out of shape. “Name’s
Carson, what’s yours?” “Tatsuo,” I answered and continued
walking, picking up my pace. “Hey! Which way you heading?” he
caught up again. I swear, this kid’s annoying. “Heading in a straight line,” I
pointed out. “To biology with Mr. Clarkson.” “Cool, we’re heading in the same
direction,” he smiled. “Oh, and there are a lot of beauties in that class.” “Look, I’m come to school for the
education; not to check out girls,” I rolled my eyes. “I’m just saying, dude,” he kept
smiling, “There’s Stephanie Meyers, Clover Brown, Lynn Trang, oh and Kim
Hughes! She’s the cutest of all! Sure, could be scary at times, but she’s
amazing, but then again what do you expect from the captain of the cheerleading
squad…” I let Carson rumble on about this
Kim Hughes. She can’t be that good of a soul, if she could only win over these
foolish human boys just by her good looks. We entered class, a little earlier
than the other students, so I grabbed a seat near the back; not wanting much
attention. That Carson kid had veered off with some other guys hanging outside
of class. They didn’t notice me, much to my relief. I pulled out my soul teller and
checked it. Nope, nothing out of the ordinary. I am the guardian of this little
town, Raymond. The job of a Soul Tamer is, well to protect those souls from the
Dragoons, spirits that feast off of the innocent souls. I’m in charge of
cleaning up this town of those Dragoons. “Hello,” a middle age man with wavy
ginger hair and black eyes. “You must be Tatsuo Satori, and that is not your
seat or lab station.” “Sorry, sir,” I apologized as I
tossed my backpack over my shoulder. “So where is my seat?” “Over there,” he pointed across the
room to the second row. “And your lab partner will be Kimberly Hughes.” Perfect, the girl that Carson kept
going on about. Now I’m stuck being her lab partner. “And aren’t you lucky? We’re doing
an experiment today,” he smiled. “So you’ll be able to interact with your
friend a little more.” I sighed and walked over to my new
seat. I felt his eyes following me all the way across the room until I sat down
and pulled out my soul teller/ phone as a form of dismissal. To my relief he sat down at his desk
and started typing away on his computer. Never
trust anybody but yourself. My father. His favorite words. And
so far, it’s been helping me through life. Ignoring people as I go, minding my
own business. The only person that has really reached out for me is Mr. Scott.
He’s my neighbor and had been like a guardian to me, ever since I came here. He
gives me two meals a day. He’s just an old man that lives next to me. I love
him like a grandfather. So far, he’s followed me through the country, from city
to city. “Wherever you go, I go, boy, I’m old
and could sure use this adventure,” he had once said. I smiled before pulling out my soul
teller and examined the map. Nothing; not a soul lost or any dragoons daring to
show their faces around this town. I guess, I might be the best soul tamer
ever. I’ve kept this city in order and for the past two days, not a single
problem. “What do you think you’re doing?” I
could tell by the guy’s voice that he wants trouble, no doubt about it, but to
make him angrier I just continued to “text” on my soul teller. “I’m talking to you!” he grabbed my
shoulder and turned me around. I came face to face with a pair of scary silver
eyes. “I don’t answer to people like you,”
I easily flicked his hand away from shoulder. He raised a fist in anger and I
smirked. Humans are so easy to provoke. “Howard! Enough!” a beautiful voice.
The same voice that could draw any guy in if it was not used to yell at this
Howard guy. To my relief, Howard lowered his
fist and stabbed a finger into my chest, “Kim Hughes is my girlfriend. You better watch out, punk.” “I’m not your girlfriend,” the voice
came up right behind me. I slowly turned around and my eyes
widen. A girl, no, a goddess stood there. Her long honey - blond hair tied back
in a simple ponytail. Her uniform fit her slim figure perfectly and she crossed
her arms; her green eyes dull with annoyance. Her pink backpack on hung from
her right shoulder. “We broke up a week ago and I don’t
plan to get back with you,” she broke into my thoughts. “But you need to let me explain!”
Howard begged. “Explain how you ‘accidently’ kissed
Jenny,” she dropped her bag by her seat next to me. “No, falling off a bike and
scraping your knee is an accident. Cheating is not an accident and it can’t be
healed or forgotten like a scrape on your knee.” Dang, Kim Hughes is really something
else. She isn’t like any normal human I’ve met all across the country. What’s going on with me? My heart,
it’s not beating a normally. It’s picking up speed. Wait, what am I doing? My
dad told me it’s better not to make too many friends because they might
influence my job as a soul tamer. He also told me not to make any female-human
friends, afraid that I might fall in love with one of them, like he did with my
demi-demon mother. “I made a big mistake! Please, you
can trust me,” Howard continued to beg which is making me sick to the stomach. “Why don’t you leave her alone,” I
spoke up for the first time, making Kim look up and Howard to glare at me.
“It’s obvious that she can’t trust you anymore. Give her a break.” “Stay out of our business, new kid!”
the boy threatened. “This ‘new kid’ has a name,” I
answered, annoyed, “the name’s Tatsuo.” “Look, I don’t care,” he said as he
readjusted his strap, “Just be careful with Kim, okay?” His shoulder hit mine as he walked
pass and slumped down in a seat across the room. By now, most of the students
have piled in by now and some had stop by and watched, making me uncomfortable.
“Nothing to see here,” said Kim,
with a cute smile. “Just get to your seats before Clarkson gets back and gives
us some stupid project that he’s not going to even grade.” I followed her words and took my
seat next to her, enjoying the silence between Kim and me. The classroom
erupted in chatter as kids talked about some stupid things. “So,” the goddess finally spoke up.
“You’re my new lab partner, then?” I nodded and went back to my soul
teller. “You don’t talk much do you?” she
continued to talk, much to my disappointed. “ Where are you from?” “I really don’t settle down in one
place enough to call it home,” I answered. “Oh,” she stopped talking for a
little bit, but continued, “So your name is Tatsuo? I’m Kim.” “Yeah, I’ve heard about you around
the school before,” I said. “Really? I didn’t realize I was that
popular,” Kim said. “You are what the boys describe as a
goddess,” I had blushed a little, cursing myself secretly for letting my human
side get the better of me. “Oh? The boys really said that,” she
looked at me through the corner of her eye. I nodded and looked away, shamefully
hiding my red face. The bell had saved my life and the
old teacher stood up to start class. -------- “Yo! Tatsuo!” not exactly the voice I
wanted to hear. “Yes, Carson?” I turned around. “Can
I help you?” It’s lunch now and I really try my
best to avoid the food. I never really needed to eat. My demon side had always provided me enough energy for me to
be able to survive. However, I still need water for my human body to be able to
function. “Where you going?” he asked as he
caught up to me, again. “Nowhere,” I answered and it was the
truth. I didn’t have a single clue where I was going. “Well, you play football?” asked
Carson. Mr. Scott had introduced that sport
to me so I nodded. “Well, I’m having a scrimmage out on
the field right now against Howard’s football team and I only need a wide
receiver.” At the mention of Howard’s name, I
immediately smirked. “Howard,” I said. “He owns a
football team?” “He’s quarterback of Raymond High’s
team,” answered Carson. “Well, then I’m in to show him up,”
I cracked my knuckles, “Let’s go!” © 2013 tammyhuynhAuthor's Note
