GATOR

GATOR

A Poem by Jeff Overton

I was out one day

Ya know, just walking along

Singing along to my favourite  song

The hot day started to take its toll

so I took a trip to my usual watering hole

Dipped my flask into the brink

Opened  my mouth and started to drink

Suddenly with a mighty splash

Green and scaly made a dash

Locked its jaws around my neck

Dragged me to the water’s edge

Tried to reason but it played deaf

Fought and fought with all my might

Poked its eyes and bit its hide

 Lungs are filling

Air is spent

Round and round we both went

smell of blood tinged with piss

as my last breath slowly drifts

bubbles rise and then they pop

just like my neck

when its jaws slammed shut
