Umbrellas When You Don't Need Them

Umbrellas When You Don't Need Them

A Poem by p.kuhl

your hair still grows through all your disdain

your ankles, exposed, you're expecting the rain

but it will forever be overcast

so you throw away all the clothes that you own

and spend your day perfecting your groan

but when it's all done, your friends want you back

and how can you do it? I see you, you look away

was it something I said, or did you lead yourself astray?

you're ironically sarcastic

in every way

you don't have a job, and you don't call your mom

you're too tired to sob, too mad to stay calm

so you drink wine through a straw

and sit on your palms

your bitterness builds, and it's weighing you down

you feel unfulfilled but you won't skip town

all in all, you're hoping to drown

in mistakes we both made, together downtown

the words literally caused my insides to shake

I love the way this unravels. And I mean that almost literally- as she seems to unravel throughout the piece. I dig the rhythm of the words and the way she seems unlikeable and yet not so unlikeable, after-all. I may have been her once upon a time. Maybe not. This is a great piece.
