THE LILAC TREE.

The apple blossoms performed in a white dress

Bridesmaids to the sweet Lilac

Which flowered in soft pose against the old barn wall

To bow its leaves to the gentle rain

Reflecting in luminescence to a hidden moon

And I stood in silence

Allowing the rain to wash me

Perfumed in the slow scent of this night

My eyes on the large red clay urn

Which lounged in uncaring mood beneath the Lilac tree

Its rounded face upturned

With a widening mouth tilted to catch the drink

And I watched the rain sweeten the Lilac leaves

To kiss in falling then chase each other

And fall like iridescent pearls, each teardrop

In fancy’s drip so the red clay mouth drank the wine

And my eyes closed to the play

My mind understanding the rain to be a gentle fall

Then more, of full and generous emotions

Which fell in swollen joy to the mouth of the red urn

Filling the sacred vessel to the brim

With joy’s hidden knowledge of love’s nectar

I felt the sensation of knowing

Understanding the red urn as the soul

This precious vessel

Which swells as a catch for emotive love’s rain

Its mouth, an open invitation for the wine

Which then pours and floods the heart to an intoxication

Am I not in love? Am I not the Lilac tree

And is not my heart the urn

Which now catches passion’s teardrops

And makes me cry from my heart?

I open my eyes and paint this picture to my mind

The apple blossom and the Lilac tree

The rain and this sensuous perfumed night air

I see the red mouth of the soul overflow

And I walk slowly back to my love.
