Black Rose

Black Rose

A Poem by C.L. Ritter

I walked alone in an empty garden
despair and anguish I did not feel
my love I've lost and did not pardon
my black heart I cannot reveal.

The hole in the garden is wide and deep
my love I covered up that night
I did not have the heart to weep
nor was I filled with fright.

I wandered through this place of mourn
and came upon a rose as black as sky
It's stem was long and full of thorns
It had long already died.

I walked over to the covered hole
and put down the rose of death'
there I would keep it forever more
for my beautiful, beautiful, Beth.
