In The Not So Still of The Night

In The Not So Still of The Night

A Poem by Pete
"

I put a piece of paper under my pillow, and when I could not sleep I wrote in the dark. - Thoreau

"
Night Owl Syndrome: Do You Have It?

in overwhelming, permeating stillness
darkness weighs heavily, a necklace of cinder blocks
loneliness pressing in from all sides, pressuring
crickets boast a deafening roar
owls don't ask because they know who

grass is heard growing, hearts beating and prayers begging 'pon microphoned lips
a cough is a nuclear explosion
a wind shift delivers the constant whoosh of cars out on the freeway
cars going nowhere
boogeymen live in closets and dust bunny condos 'neath beds with the key to the door
toothless puppets on long strings chatter and wander aimlessly through cobwebbed hallways of empty minds searching for lost memories
need i say more

Author's Note

Pete
"Night is certainly more novel and less profane than day. I soon discovered that I was acquainted only with its complexion; and as for the moon, I had seen her only as it were through a crevice in a shutter, occasionally. Why not walk a little way in her light?" - Thoreau

Everything seems louder and faster at night. I think it’s because that nature’s rhythm is for us to slow down and unwind. The world is quieter and so even the smallest sound seems louder.

Many times our mind wander and drift in the nocturnal hours and often we feel a loneliness
