Unopened

Unopened

A Poem by Richard Parker

father of mine, with such a sick malign
as your company, oh so suddenly
you did resign with such a quick decline
locked in your study, with your malady

father no more, will you unlock the door
your friend the cancer, is not the answer
do not dare ignore, my willful implores
such a weak chapter, questions unanswered

father post mortem, son feeling orphaned
strangers in lot, but similar in thought
feeling misfortune, dealing distortion
answers I sought, befuddlement I wrought

son of the father, thought himself smarter
son of the father, locked in the larder

A sonnet of raw perfection, tearing at the heart. Such an intense experience in these fourteen lines. You can see and hear the pleading, a desperate cry to save a loved one who seems locked and sinking in his own darkness, perhaps to preserve dignity, to hide pain and sorrow... but at such an untold cost. This one touches the reader, even those who might not know the pain the narrator has personally experienced.
