Unheard Silence

Unheard Silence

A Poem by Rachel M. Benson

I am a woman silent…

            Not a girl

Surrounded by a house of toys…

All I desire is my voice…

            SILENCE…
                        PRUDENCE…
                                    OBEY…
           BEHAVE…

Don’t speak…

            Don’t talk back…

Bat your eyes…

            Smile sweetly…

Laugh when told…

            FRUSTRATION…
                        CASTRATION…
                                    MUTATION…
           MUTELY…

Tearing down my soul…

            Shredding my heart in pieces…

Breaks apart my defenses…

            Be submissive…

Act nice…mustn’t look foolish

            SCREAMING…
                        WEEPING…
                                    MENACING…
           WEAK…
Listen to ME!

            No longer silent…

Expressive … Commanding …

            Singing … Arguing …

                        Laughing … Loving …

SCREAMING …

In numbers unknown…

            Speaking in the silence …

Saying I will be HEARD …

            I will Voice … Express … Sing … Laugh …

Unheard by you …

I WILL BE HEARD BY YOU …
