Spending time in the wild of Pench National Park

A Story by Rajesh Thakur
"

Wildlife in India is quite diverse and habitats of sanctuaries and national parks in different parts of the country are quite different and hence different types of faunas are found there.

"

India offers wildlife lovers a great opportunity to witness activities of wild animals and jungle safaris that add to their adventure. Spread over Chindwara and Seoni districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh, Pench National Park is one of the largest National Parks in Central India. The park was named after the beautiful Pench river which flows from North to South bisecting the picturesque park into two halves.

The forested landscape was declared as a sanctuary way back in 1977 and was established as a Tiger Reserve 15 years later. Tiger is the biggest attraction of Pench National Park. Their population is quite big here but the big ‘cats’ are not seen very frequently. Apart from tigers, there are seven panthers in the park that you can catch glimpses of. However your eyes and camera lens can capture plenty of chital, sambhar, boar, nilgai and jackal. You can also see leopard, sloth bear, jungle cat, porcupine, wild dog, striped hyena, gaur, fox barking deer and chowsingha. Pench National Park is also famous as a home to varieties of bird species. Junglefowl, crow pheasant, peafowl, red vented bulbul, crimson breasted barbet, red tailed drongo, lesser whistling teal, shoveler, magpie robin and herons could be seen very easily.

Other than these, 39 different species of mammals, 13 species of reptiles and 3 species of amphibians are found in the national park.  A trip to Pench National Park would make one’s Madhya Pradesh tour highly exciting, if he or she is interested in wildlife. Conducted tours to the national park are offered by local tour operators from whom you can choose a package. You can opt for jungle safari inside the park and to enjoy the ‘forest’ ambience, you can stay for a night at the Jungle Home Resort.
