Lenore

Lenore

A Poem by Rafeeq Hawkins
"

Homage piece.

"
As I lay here alone on this late night eve,
the air cooled by a winter breeze,
a spider crawled up my sleeve,
it's poisoned body kept my mind at ease.

It was poison that took her away from me,
robbing my soul of complacency,
replacing it quite bitterly,
with combustible rage lasting an eternity.

My love.

I will always remember her name,
it is the one truth I have yet to claim,
sadness ensues with the coming rain,
I believe the sky revels in my pain.

Lenore.

My sweet Lenore,
how come you upon my door,
like a tide returning to shore,
I had never known love before,
until the day I met Lenore.

I will tell you a story, as not to be a bore,
not a tale of dragons or forgotten lore,
but a tale of murder at it's core,
concerning the monster that stole my Lenore.

My sweet Lenore.

How the wound is still so sore,
what a bitter fate that was in store,
the moment I opened our front door,
and heard the word---

(nevermore)

I quickly sat up, I had just heard a sound,
quite odd since I was the only soul around,
I approached the stairs and curiously looked down,
what a shocking surprise I found.

It was a feather, as black as night,
why then did it shine so bright,
and captivate me like hypnotic moonlight,
as my heart slowly filled with fright.

"Who goes there?" my voice echoed in the dark,
the silence was so explosive all it needed was a spark,
during this point of the climactic story arc,
I began to miss what I lost from the start.

Lenore.

My sweet Lenore,
the way your soft kiss felt before,
as we held each other on the ocean shore,
I promised I would love you forevermore.

Rage.

"You are the monster that stole my Lenore!!!
It's time I evened the score!!!
The day I buried her I swore,
that I would smite your heart until it beat no more!!!"

Faced with an evil I could barely comprehend,
I knew my life would soon meet an end,
I only prayed that I would see my beloved again,
as I slowly unsheathed my deadly metal friend.

"Demon, what you did to my Lenore cannot be undone!!!
A dying moon has replaced my sun!!!
You came into our house and stole the wrong one!!!
Now I offer both barrels of my shotgun!!!"

I fired blindly into the darkness below,
if I hit my mark I did not know,
I reloaded my weapon, not only for show,
those bullets were meant for the head of my foe.

Suddenly I felt taloned hands seize me from behind,
with a touch that could only be described as unkind,
agony and horror slowly intertwined,
one last thought went through my mind.

Lenore.

My sweet Lenore,
your beautiful face outside my door,
when our love was only a spore,
I'll cherish that day forevermore...
