Blue, Green Eyes

Blue, Green Eyes

A Poem by readwritelive25
"

i know this is an extremely long poem

"

The first time I saw you

Was that one summer day

When the clouds were bloated with rain

And the sky had turned to gray

And as we locked eyes

My blue, your green

Something happened between us

Something that can’t be seen

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the raindrops fell from the clouds

As long as the thunder rumbled the earth

As long as the blue and green eyes didn’t look away

The first time we kissed

Was that one autumn day

The wind swirled the fallen leaves

Across the path, in our footsteps’ way

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the leaves turned red and gold

As long as the wind swept them to the ground

As long as the blue and green eyes stayed shut while our mouths were together

The first time we fought

Was that one winter day

The air was bitterly cold

And on the ground the snow lay

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the winter turned the rain to snow

As long as the white blanket of snow covered the ground

As long as the blue and green eyes created a gaze that would keep us both warm

The first time we cried

Was that one Christmas Eve

It was after our fight

And you said you would leave

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as Christmas came every year

As long as we stayed up until midnight to tell each other Merry Christmas

As long as the blue and green eyes next to each other was the best present to ever want

The first time we touched

Was that one spring day

The birds chirped, the hummingbirds sang

As we lay together with everything to do and nothing to say

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the birds flew through the new trees

As long as the flowers bloomed every year

As long as the blue and green eyes searched each other in happiness

The first time we said goodbye

Was that one summer day

You left for camp, I stayed behind

Wondering if our ends would fray

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the summer sun shined

As long as we wrote each other grass-stained letters

As long as the blue and green eyes felt empty miles away

The first time you asked

Was that one autumn day

You asked me to marry you, and I was so scared

I said no, right there at the perfect spot at the bay

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the water glistened in the sun and rose in the rain

As long as marriage isn’t the only way to stay together

As long as the blue and green eyes were happy as they were

The first time I said yes

Was that one winter day

You asked again, and even bought a ring

You had me convinced; the wedding was planned for May

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the blazing fire further warmed our happily flushed cheeks

As long as your fingers lingered where you slipped my ring on

As long as the blue and green eyes held all their vows

The first time we dressed in white and black

Was that one spring day

We were outside, I walked up the aisle on the grass

Our parents cried in disbelief, we kissed the same way

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as there was green grass under our feet

As long as you held me and our vows

As long as the blue and green eyes were together for the rest of their lives

The first time we got good news

Was that one summer day

We left the doctor beaming,

Found out it was a boy and named him Jay

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as humans could create babies

As long as you wanted some of our own

As long as the blue and green eyes got passed down to our children

The first time we saw our children leave

Was that one autumn day

Jay left for college, the twins soon after

And when the rest grew up we didn’t know how the time had got away

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as children grew up and their parents cried

As long as the parents tucked away memories in boxes

As long as the blue and green eyes didn’t mind their full company

The first time we felt old

Was that one winter day

Two children engaged, and Jay bought a house

In the country, miles away, complete with a barn full of hay

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as brides shopped for dresses

As long as new house-buyers thrillingly picked out paint swatches

As long as the blue and green eyes watched it all with senses of accomplishment and sadness

The first time we were away from each other

Was that one spring day

You felt faint, checked into the hospital, and called your sister

I was on a business trip and found out you had cancer that way

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as people survived from cancer every day

As long as hospitals became people’s second homes

As long as the blue and green eyes willed each other on

The first time we left home

Was that one summer day

Jay checked us into a nursing home

We took our most precious belongings, for there we would stay

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as old people enjoyed summer from linoleum floors

As long as their children visited weekly

As long as the blue and green eyes could live out their last old years together

The first time we were separated

Was that one autumn day

I fell and broke my hip

On a hospital bed away from you is where I would lay

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as the elderly grew weaker through the years

As long as you didn’t mind I could never walk again

As long as the blue and green eyes snuck together in the quiet moments when the nurses all left

The first time we were never to be the same

Was that one winter day

You saw me and asked who I was

Alzheimer’s had taken you away

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as I knew who you were, even when you didn’t

As long as your memory could always come back for a little bit

As long as the blue and green eyes never failed to see through and recognize

The last time we saw each other

Was that one spring day

Both our systems were failing, but it was our anniversary

And the nurses put us together on that one day in May

And I promised you that I would love you

As long as May came every year

As long as hands could grasp others

As long as the blue and green eyes opened, closed, and saw each other for last moments

And you promised me that you would love me

As long as I was here

As long as the blue and green eyes could be together

And that nothing else mattered.
