The Cursed Man

The Cursed Man

A Poem by redlife000

A weary soul wanders alone.
A cursed man ever left to roam.
The home he seeks he'll never find
Unless the binds of fate unwind.

A mighty warrior through and through,
A husband, father, mentor too.
On a quest for great renown,
A thing of light is what he found.

"Oh traveler from far away,
what do you wish of me this day?"

The man, he thought and thought some more
For something worth his wishing for.
His mind went to his family's need,
Four hungry mouths for him to feed.
But as he sat and thought away,
His longing and his greed took sway.
He thought of castles, maids, and gold,
Enough to last til he was old.
And at that thought came out his fear
Of dying in a few short years.
His mind made up, his answer sure,
He looked up at the being pure.

"My wish, good thing, is to be free.
Be free of my mortality.
I wish that neither time nor sword
Could make me lie entombed in boards."

The being sighed and shook its head,
"It is done. You'll n'ere be dead."
The man was happy as could be
At his new possibilities.
He didn't hear the being say,
"My friend, you've entered hell today."

The man then quickly changed his view.
The whole world seemed, to him, brand new.
He slayed more beasts than ere before.
He took on armies by the score.
To his delight his family name
Quickly rose in wealth and fame.

But as he watched his time go by,
He witnessed his whole family die.
He watched as his once famous name
Began to fall to crime and shame.
And as he fled his former land,
His thoughts went back to what he'd planned.
As for the wish that caused it all,
He hoped to wish for his own fall.

The man continues his long hunt
To find a way his pain to blunt.
His mind no longer cares for life.
He longs for death to end his strife.
And until he finds his relief,
It will be his strongest belief
That just one life is long enough
To do a lot of helpful stuff.
With that one life a man can do
Whatever he puts his mind to.

He shares his tale with all he meets
In hopes his fate will not repeat.
He ends that tale with one last line:
"Remember: What you have is fine."
