Emily (for Valentine's Day)

Emily (for Valentine's Day)

Emily (for Valentine’s Day)

I was talking to Emily

yesterday in her garden.

It was Winter time,

snow covered the ground

and bushes,

but the path was clear

and we moved with ease.

At one point

she turned to me,

“Do you see it,

the way the sun

glints on the Willow tree?

Do you see the colors

bouncing from the creek?

Or, am I only imagining

my loneliness

in my Winter’s refrain?”

I choose to be alone

and yet my mind

sees worlds,

and oceans, whose tides touch

every shore;

its sands caressing

my bare feet,

my heart beating its rhythm.

We walked for hours, it seemed,

talking until the sunlight faded,

cutting shadows on barren trees.

Tired, she returned to her room,

leaving me standing,

still wandering

in her memory

and the garden she loved so well.
