just some ramblings on a lazy afternoon back in....well, you know when, don't you?

10/25/96

 

to daydream is to exit

from a boring stretch of

highway

that meanders in and out

of conscious thought.

the scenes are never scary

since our eyes don’t leave the

roadway;

they instead divine the

answers (to dilemmas)

we have sought.

 

the wakeful sleep intrigues us

as we stumble through our

doldrums

into distant, clouded places

draped in sighs.

revealing sights reverberate

and echo through the jumble

to lend credence to the

silly whims

reality decries.

To be able to daydream is a luxury... and we should take advantage more often than not.

LONG ago a band called the Monkees did a song: "Cheer up, sleepy Jean, oh what can it mean to a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?" It's always been a thought of mine that poets just take daydreams and write then out for everyone else to see. I actually wrote this piece in October of 1996, my first semester in college (I turned 40 in the midst of my freshman year), and the whole college experience, while daunting, was so invigorating that I allowed my mind this little trip through my consciousness.
