Night shift

Night shift

A Poem by ron

Night shift

Standing guard while others sleep.

The moon and the stars are my only company.

Doing my rounds making sure all is safe at post.

Knowing that those who left me to take care of things I guard are sleeping sound.

Flashlight watching eyes scanning for the smallest inconsistency.

Hourly reports written in the dim light.

Once again, I get up and make my rounds.

Once again, I fill out the shift log.

Rounds and reports become so redundant.

I know no one sees the mundane job I do.

Nevertheless, it is my responsibility.

Making minimum wage, fighting the taxman that takes so much.

I’m not skilled at much but my skills I hold are not the ones others care to practice.

I’m one of the many who watch and guard at the times no one cares to.

I like this piece. People underestimate the importance of this job- it carries a lot of unerving circumstances and dangers with it. It also has a sense of mystery with it; allowing the reader to ask questions. Well done, keep up the good work.

Thank you so much.
There must be lots of poems floating around when doing those rounds.

Some times I do think of a few while on my rounds lol
we only can sleep when a guard is awake. They deserves to be honored.

Fantastic piece.

Wow. It is good to know that you are a security guard or officer . It is an honorable job but I hate that they don't pay much for the danger of that job. It is doubly good to know you have a poetic talent...Good time to write at night...:)
