How to Trick the Devil

How to Trick the Devil

A Poem by Rorke Hardy

Important Directions

First you will need some salt and seven stones

If you’re reading this than you have no time for questions

Pour the salt into your right hand

Now throw it over your left shoulder

Pour the salt into your left hand

And place it on your tongue, no matter what the taste is

Now you will hear his hoofed feet approaching

Quickly

Place two stones in your right pocket

Two in your left

Swallow the rest, no matter what the taste is

Now you will smell his breath, all sulfur and brimstone

And you will feel the heat of his eyes as he knocks softly on your door

It will open

It will always open

And the heat from his eyes will singe the hair from your scalp

Now he will eat your stomach first

And the stones will crack his teeth and bruise his gums

He will be thirsty so he will pluck out your tongue

Like the flower from its roots

And seeking the moist skin there he will find only salt

And be vexed

That is how you trick the devil
