A New Number

A New Number

A Poem by rubie
"

Oftentimes, the arrival of a birthday brings on new and profound thoughts. I guess I was just lucky to capture them here....

"

A New Number

I don’t really

feel any different

than I did yesterday

just the soft whisper

of a calendar page

turning in the night

assigning a strange new number

a new hat to wear

a different perspective

giving pause for thought

and reason to wonder

gratitude for surviving

big, brash and brazen choices

quickened by tender years

and eyes that chose to peek

around shifting corners

into sometimes blinding light

and often pitch black voids

always electing the option

of bright and passionate journeys

leading to an examined life

and
a series of mindful lefts and rights

that have placed me on this rock

like so many times before

looking into the open maw

of the continental divide

and musing over the fact

that I don’t really
feel any different

than I did yesterday

As yes my friend, as Jacob mentioned, this is a post that all of us can identify with in one way or another. It is written and expressed very well and I like your style! I am especially taken with these lines...

I feel as though you've taken a page from my diary my dear. I love this one Rubie. ~Sharon

A write to ponder on, as our minds remain young and never falter apart from where did I put my keys! Its the physical slow ageing that stiffness here, that muscle you never knew you had and a feel of am I getting slower! lol I enjoyed this. Happy Birthday:)

Thank you for your kind words and the birthday wishes.

Both are much appreciated!
BRAVO!! I loved it more than broccoli, and I LOVE broccoli!

I wanted to follow my instinct, after reading your brilliant comment on Jacob's poem, about Hemingway. You spoke about smelling the pages of a book, feeling its spine and tracing its cover with your fingers. That alone was the most poetic of all comments I have ever read, and I told myself, I've got to check this person out! Well, I did, and I have...and I am one happy camper! You are wonderful, and I will take delight in indulging myself, more!

Oh, and happy birthday...nice meeting you, Rubie! ..did I mention I loved the poem?

My best,
Kelly

Ohhh I really like this saying - feeling the same way while teaching a bunch of teens :D
age is not really a number...that is the concrete level of things, but figuratively we move on as if the calendar never turned....not feeling any different, but knowing time moves on and some day will move on without us.
but we can enjoy it while we may...

you are on a roll my friend...we can all relate to this one...as poets finding their way along life's strewn path.

Another day older, another day wiser (more or less), and the continued contemplations of our place in the world... Should I be wishing you happy birthday here? But, I cannot help but wonder if we should be mindful that while we don't feel any different the second one number turns to the next on our calendars, have we not received another wonderful gift: another day to live! I love the way you paint this shifting of days and years in our lives and on our calendars. Well done!
