In Search of a Rheostat

In Search of a Rheostat

A Poem by rubie

In Search of a Rheostat

I shined my light too brightly

A laser beam I’m told

And burned a hole in my beloved

Who left me standing in the cold

The fears he carried with him

From past mistakes he’d made

Provoked his need to finish us

And forced his love to fade

So now he feels much safer

Not vulnerable or exposed

And I sit here in sadness

As doors have all been closed

I’ll try to cull the lessons

Find dimmers for that light

But that won’t change my missing him

And it sure won’t make things right

They say when hearts get broken

Your hopes and dreams must go

But I will always think of him

When the winds of sadness blow

the metaphor here is elegantly carried through the poem...and it wrings with sadness and regret...something we can all remember and feel from a past love to which we might have done the same.

thank you for your kind review, jacob
ah, when love's light needs an adjusting a rheostat will certainly give you more control... however, when a person fails to leave the baggage of the past behind I am not so sure a dimmer switch will work... i love your use of the word cull (a once well-used word in my world - my grandfather culled - graded - fish for the merchant) as I don't see it used much... it is always sad when people leave because they can't handle all that love... this is a very good piece, Rubie... it is good to see you back :)
