Progress

Progress

A Poem by Alex McFadyen

In the beginning

We were a snowball

Rolling down a mountain

Augmenting to avalanche

Destruction was the path we travelled

But I do not mourn for the weak

For life succumbed to the more lively

Where all the forests

All the happy little forest creatures

Returned to the Earth with the power of Phoenix

Now humanity is Titanic

Traveling from creek to river to ocean

Growing and accelerating exponentially

Like a cancer, like a plague, like perfection

Possibilities multiply

Our world grows with it

From flatness

To roundness

To boundless

Three dimensional directions

Undefined limits

We are the masters of survival

And we will tap the powers of a million suns

Like Gods

Bound to the trenches of time

Immorality will be our reality

And euphoria will barrage from us from all directions

But I pray that we never experience true peace

Because destruction is the path we travelled and will travel again

Change is destruction’s face and progress is its heart

So hit me with everything you got.

Well, this is quite interesting. Indeed, the quest snowballs into avalanche and eventually destructs everything. But all this in the name of progress. In my latest writing, I approached the same problem with chaos and organization. Organization is the other side of the game and does not necessarily leads to progress but sometimes, when people are lucky, only to a better organization of their lives. However, your writing reminds the reader of some little inconvenient truths that are being used for centuries in the human comedy. Only for that, and the necessary dose of thinking that it requires, your writing deserves attention!!!

What a compelling and profound piece of writing! I particularly love the fourth stanza:

"From flatness
To roundness
To boundless
Three dimensional directions
Undefined limits"

The next stanza is great as well:

"We are the masters of survival
And we will tap the powers of a million suns

{This reminds me of the people of Atlantis who supposedly tapped into the power of the sun through the use of crystal, which ultimately destroyed them.)

Like Gods
Bound to the trenches of time"

Love the imagery in the last two lines of this stanza.

"Change is destruction's face and progress is its heart"

Makes me think of the Obama mantra, "Change we can believe in."

"So hit me with everything you got."

Be careful what you ask for.

Great job!
