October

October

A Poem by Elliott
"

Had to write poems for class, decided to make all of them for my boyfriend. Written 14 Feb. 2025

"

Your arrival was preceded by the footsteps of a cat,

a silence in the cosmogonies, a whisker away

from breaching the sound barrier.

A defence against the meteorites, yet Felicette slinks through, pit-pat,

and offsets the hair-trigger

and thus begins the autumnal zephyrs of October.

As dawn breaks,

Helios, the colour of yolk

lifts the flaxen threads of your hair,

and the stormy-eyed becomes a threnody"

pulsars of all my lucky stars.

Glass chimes shimmer in a forgotten bookstore,

and halts the perusement of undusted stacks.

A rippling peal, seraphic,

and the lilt of your upturned lips,

enough to stoke the dying ember.

Orange against orange,

a canvas of burnished hues and ambers

overridden, a miniature dust storm

in the wake of carved air, rolls on

through endless miles of pavement.

Steady are the beats of the drum,

synchronised with a heart that bleeds gold into a myriad of letters

that form words that form sentences,

hidden in plaintext,

for the one and not the many.

The laws of attraction

forget to factor in

the gap between platform and train"

a single step"with the weight of

your orbit pulling me in.

And so you stand in the gilded rays

that cease to wane, as twilight engulfs us

into the singularity when my eyes reach yours,

and time is all but solid.

The ouroboros unhooks itself, preserved no longer

in the eternity that is October.
