Images In The Woodgrain          by Sami Khalil

A modern Shakespearean sonnet…

Surrounded by lush woods…body and strife

Topped with green canopies, invoking land

Images in woodgrain… venture a life

Escaping unbound thoughts, as light gleams grand.

Enticed by sweet gestures of natural wood

Stories be told in houses, centuries old

From timbre to works of art, finely stood

A testament to swirling dreams of gold.

Are we not molded by invisible hands

Created by Love through His great image

Why then detest wondrous and living strands

The gifted crafts of God mock sacrilege.

Surrounded by lush woods…comforting souls

I feel blameless in my visceral strolls.

My late dad carved period furniture out of walnut and finely carved a chess set of pieces out of wood including the board. He was a fine craftsman like all those who appreciate wood. Unfortunately my skills are limited to burning wood in a slow combustion to keep warm, I had not the desire or the patience as it was painstakingly slow. Much like my writing lol, I’m in and out, finished in one take. Yes! We should appreciate nature more than ever now. Another fine sonnet that had me drifting off your page. Nice work.

I grew up in old Victorian homes, and the craftsmanship is truly a lost art. The woodwork in those homes is incomparable, and you could always see the love that the craftsman put into his work. It's not surprising to me that Jesus was a carpenter, and I do believe that we were molded by invisible hands created by Love through His great image. Well done.

I tend to draw the monsters in the tiles in my bathroom and the landscapes in the wood grain of my doors. Gives flights to the imagination. This does also. Only better.
