sudden suture

sudden suture

A Poem by Kara Emily Krantz

Will you discard me when you’re done?

Dismiss me
as you do the criminal record
you keep so clandestinely by your bed?

Perhaps you are trying to shock me away
and I am too foolish to see…
[yes you want me]
but as you would any female
who tripped into your bed
and into your arms.

Oh, slowly I will fall for you
and swiftly / suddenly / surely
you will
break
my heart.

I am young and naive
[there is no shame in this]
and yet I can feel you laugh at me
as I leave.

The loss of you now
would mean the sudden suture of my heart
[gasp and then you’re gone]

but take too long to leave
and I will bereave your absence
like the loss
of excitement
in my life

(I will lose sight of happiness)

break it off now—

so I won’t be broken later.
