Standing before Picasso’s Guernica for the first time

Standing before Picasso’s Guernica for the first time

A Poem by Samuel Brown

The child’s eyes

Are vacant

With the gaze of god

Descending into

A pit

                Of prophetic ecstasy-

Of skin folding outward

And turning to naked bone-

                Of the broken blade-

Of the flowering grip-

                Of the ripped torso

                On the still beating horse-

Of the orgasmic scream

Burning in flame-

                Of the shame-

Of the crooning necks

That hang overhead-

                Of the wide eyed bull-

Of the throbbing skull-

Of the nonsensical ramblings of war-

Of the eternal cry

Belting

From the

Mouth

                Of the child’s

                Mother
