That Old Young Love

A love poem about a charming elderly couple in a pub in Cork, Ireland

In a Cork city lively bar, 
I notice two old lovers together 
Side by side, enjoying a drink 
Amongst the joyful chant of the crowd.

My friend tells me, noticing, 
He forgets the names of the pair 
But they’re regulars here; 
The nicest people you could meet.

I look over again, in wonder, 
For their love’s as clear as day to see; 
One hand each on a beer glass, cold, 
One warmer, placer on the back of the other.

Once glasses are emptied, with hearts clearly filled, 
They arise to make their way home, 
Yet not until some hugs to bid goodnight
To friends they’ve had here for so long.

As one helps to put on the other’s coat 
And backpack, like from schooldays of old, 
I’d wish for one day, to tell a tale like theirs: 
The gentlemen, in love by the Lee.
