Imaginary Wars of Rain

Imaginary Wars of Rain

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

A child sitting by a window imagining what's pouring rain.

"

All I can do today
Is watch the pouring drops of rain
As it marches, the sounds are boots

Like warrior troops upon parade

Enlisting goes on right outside my window

An unseen army forms within my imagination
I can’t help but strategize

And set the battle stations

Watching nature get pummeled hit
Insects falling soldier over wet
Legs kicking up upon their backs

Death more tragic than Macbeth

Melodramatic I deem the struggles
Going round and round in my head
Casualties upon the battlefield

Conflicts all pretend

And the raindrops

Fly like arrows down from sky
Fall upon the flowers, soldiers of the garden
Take them to wounded knee, stagger then to die

In catapults of earth some fight on…
Others accept their storm, know their fate
Still, try as they might no one escapes

From within the garden beyond the gate

And the war wages swifter, quicker on
As lightening spears across the open air
Strikes within the heart

Of trunks and limbs of Orchard Apple's lair

Giving in, to pains in throes of overtures
The wood splits and falls to nature’s heavy blows
Fells the looming towers

Mighty clashes among its groves

And chaos reigns sublime supreme
The thunder cries out her very own battle themes

Louder out of clouds like screams
Is this what victory brings

Alas I think not, as all I watch submit and surrender
The warriors now bowing down to General Sun
Skies of fireball is he whose commanding

Dries away make-believe so fun

So, now campaign of storm is done
And bright begins the sunny day
I fling open drawbridge doors of castle and...
Now the captured one has broken free to pretend another way
