A Little Piece of Innocence

A Little Piece of Innocence

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

What childhood innocence is left in us.

"

Leave the dreams

   And poems be

A time of these are gems

A piece of innocence that's left,

                                 ...in me

Breaking free...

   From a bush

Of thickset thorns

   Somewhere else,

Inside this heart

                  and  inside this head

Further still,

    Sits a river; sojourn

Against bygone hills,

 Painted darker

    Into the colors

 Of a forest evergreens

Filled by tears,

   A son once shed

 For a mother lost... hung

   Among, deep regrets

Please, will you...

   Leave the dreams

And poems be?

Of a mind now...

    lush with meadows

Where this boy a man he born

   And, shall evermore run

                              ... into the wilds

Never again,

   By notion's ageless plight...

Become overshadowed

Or even be,

    Entangled

Within the looming trees

                     ... of life

Such a poignant write and this verse really touched me. If we could but hang our regrets on a tree.

Well, the double metaphor was hinting at her suicide which wasn't hanging but it fit the narrative.

I believe its the only way to preserve our sanity in a chaotic world.
That boy within kept the poems alive in his heart... Great write, Mike - I feel like this is an affirmation for you. From darkness... there is light.

I liked it :) Very good. Innocence can be freedom, an escape within itself.
