Definition of Miracles

Definition of Miracles

A Poem by Sandra Ingram

Some people think atheists cannot believe in Miracles

To which I say--Why the hell not?

I know the improbable happens,

I just don’t believe there has to be

     some higher consciousness behind them

OK, so that’s not the strictest definition of the word “miracle”

If it makes you feel better, I can call it something else

     Chance or Luck

     Beating the Odds

     Random Acts of Nature

     or Quirks of Circumstance

The results are all the same--s**t happens

Do you want to see a miracle?

Think about your family tree

Now think about the people who came before them

The ones who were never recorded

     Back and back and back…

All the way to the first little proto-bacterium floating in a stagnant pool

Think of all that could’ve gone wrong along the way

     Plague

     Accident

The wrong sperm finding the wrong egg

But didn’t

Now…

Look in the mirror
