The Letter

The Letter

A Poem by Sergio Reyna

The letter

arrived today in its manila envelop
and the air was heavy and tiresome
and I could feel the coldness coming
from the small window not to far from the doors end.

It whispered that stifling shivering whisper
the one that sends chills through your bones
“come with me”, it said.
“leave and run with me”, it said

“do not concern yourself with the contents”
“it is only letters that form words with no meaning”
“ads and bills annoying things”
“come lets find thrills that stop the heart”
“let us go back to the start”, it said.

I felt something I’ve not felt
in a long time, a teen
the youthful naivety
to think my life would better
if I pop the molly.

“don’t think just act”
“don’t smile or frown”
“just keep that grim”
“expression and come with me”, it said.

And just like a teen
I swam in foolishness
I unlock the door and walk out
F**k it

So now I no longer stroke
instead I lie at the bottom
immobile pondering on the contents.
is this better?
Maybe.
But, then again
it was only letters with no meaning.
