Ride With Me...?

for my best friend, i loveth thou, Alex...

Radiant shadows shelter within
your frail body.
they hide there
afraid and all-seeing like an abused child.
they cry out
for you to caress them with your delicate hands
and yet you never notice
turning away before you realize
that they will forever be there.
i know
for they cower within myself as well.
i know
because i can see them within you
as you can see the radiant shadows
intertwined with my own soul as well
we are alike in this way.
many fight demons...
it is a select few who have shaken hands with the devil
and chosen to come along for the ride.

The words in italics I presume are not supposed to be comforting! However much the poet addresses another person, the more you are drawn to the fact that the poet is speaking of direct experience, but in order to look in as objective a fashion as possible the picture is viewed from outside its content. Yet the picture is so full of emotional impact that the "mask" of objectivity slips now and again, particularly in the use of words - "they cower within myself", for example. But even this analysis is false, because you are not afraid to identify yourself (i.e. the poet) with the person. You and the person are in fact one and the same. There is strength in the line: We are alike in this way". Or is there? Doubt is hiding in the wings. Then the final question is: Do you have a choice in "coming along for the ride"?

This is an incredibly well written poem. So full of gut raw sensitivity, that flows so emotionally from line to line. Gracefully, and lovingly written with a saddened heart
